CDC Issued Guidelines to Funeral Homes to Prepare for Victims of Ebola

In light of the recent concerns about the Ebola virus, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) has sent special instructions to funeral homes.

According to a September 29, 2014, report by WSFB, a CBS affiliate in Hartford Connecticut, funeral homes throughout the U.S. were issued guidelines on how to handle the remains of Ebola patients by the CDC.

The report said the guidelines consisted of a three-page list of recommendations that include instructing employees in the funeral industry "to wear protective equipment when dealing with the remains since Ebola can be transmitted in postmortem care. It also instructs to avoid autopsies and embalming."

On September 30, 2014 the U.S. began treating its first case of Ebola when a patient who was displaying symptoms was admitted to a hospital in Dallas. CDC Director, Dr. Tom Frieden, told reporters, "The patient left Liberia on September 19 and arrived in the United States on September 20."
