A new Fort Lauderdale ordinance restricts the pubic sharing of food and police have arrested two pastors and a 90-year-old man who were feeding the homeless.

This is true according to a November 5, 2014 article by Fox News that said, "homeless advocate Arnold Abbott and ministers Dwayne Black and Mark Sims were arrested Sunday." The article said the three men are looking at a $500 fine and up to 60 days in jail owing to an ordinance that took effect on October 31st.

Fox reported that Abbot, the operator of the nonprofit group, Love Thy Neighbor, was in the park feeding the homeless "when a police officer told him to 'drop that plate right now.'"

Abbott told reporters that he has no plans to discontinue his ministry and will return to the park on Wednesday to feed the homeless.

According to an October 22, 2014 article by NPR, 21 cities have restricted people from distributing food to the homeless by passing measures. NPR reported that Fort Lauderdale requires "feeding sites to be more than 500 feet away from each other, with only one allowed per city block."  The feeding sites must also be "at least 500 feet from residential properties."
