President Obama was visiting the Center for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta on September 16, 2014 and there are reports that a man with a criminal past who was carrying a handgun managed to slip past Secret Service agents and rode an elevator with the president.

The elevator incident is true and occurred without any harm to President Obama or any of the agents assigned to protect him, according to a September 30, 2014, exclusive by the Washington Examiner.

The article said, "The incident, which took place three days before an intruder jumped a fence and sprinted inside the White House, involved a failure in Secret Service advance work to prevent an armed man from coming into close proximity with Obama while he was visiting the CDC to receive a briefing about the Ebola threat."

In an October 1, 2014, commentary for Politico, Secret Service historian and author, Ronald Kessler, pointed out the problem. Kessler wrote, "On a regular basis, to appease White House or campaign staffs, Secret Service officials order agents to ignore basic security rules and let people into events without being put through a magnetometer or metal detector. That’s like letting passengers into a commercial airliner without metal detection screening. Terrorist groups like ISIL would like nothing better than to assassinate Obama. Five terrorists could come into the White House with grenades and wipe him out."

Secret Service Director Julia Pierson turned in her resignation later that day and the White House named Joseph Clancy as acting director until a permanent director is found.
