L.A. Mayor Karen Bass Refused to Fly Flags at Half Staff for Charlie Kirk

Charlie Kirk was killed by an assassin's bullet on September 10, 2025. Shortly after announcing his death, President Donald Trump ordered US Flags to be flown at half staff on federal buildings. Rumors that Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass sent out a directive that city flags be flown at full staff.

Karen Bass' directive was real, according to a news report by Fox News Los Angeles.

In most cases, municipalities follow a half mast order from the White House.

Some Los Angeles Fire Department facilities, according to the report, disobeyed the directive and honored the late Charlie Kirk with flags at half staff.

In the report, a USC law professor argued that flags should not be flown for influencers.

There are various report that other areas throughout the nation did not fly flags at half mast for Kirk in New York, New Jersey and Iowa.

In 1968, flags were lowered at half staff all over Los Angeles and the nation after the assassination of the Reverend Martin Luther King Jr.
