Muslim Working for U.S. Navy Arrested for Espionage

A U.S. Navy Times article alleging that a naturalized Muslim-American citizen working for the Navy was arrested  for trying to sell technical information to an agent of the Egyptian government has gone viral.

iRumorMill.com Determination: Real

The U.S. Navy Times article is real, was released on December 5, 2014. It said on December 3, 2014 that a federal grand jury indicted Mostafa Ahmed Awwad. He is charged "with two counts of attempting to export defense articles and technical data."

Posing as an Egyptian intelligence officer, an undercover FBI agent met with Awwad in a park in Hampton, Virginia.

The Navy Times cited a press release from the Justice Department:

"Awwad met with the undercover FBI agent, who was posing as an Egyptian intelligence officer, in a park in Hampton, Virginia. "During the meeting Awwad claimed it was his intention to utilize his position of trust with the US Navy to obtain military technology for use by the Egyptian government, including but not limited to, the designs of the USS Gerald Ford nuclear aircraft carrier. Awwad agreed to conduct clandestine communications with the undercover FBI agent by email and unattributable telephones and to conduct 'dead drops' in a concealed location in the park."

Each count, according to a December 6, 2014 article by Fox News, carries a 20 year prison sentence.
