Allegations that untrained volunteer drivers are being used by the White House to transport press in motorcades.

According to a December 26, 2014 article by the New York Times, "[volunteers] with no special training are a link in the middle of the fastest, and highest-profile, chain of vehicles in the country." The article said that this policy saves the expense of paying Secret Service agents or or local law enforcement officers to drive staff members and reporters.

The article also said that the Secret Service defended this program, which has been in practice since the 1980's. A Secret Service spokesperson told the press that "Volunteer drivers 'are briefed by the Secret Service agent responsible for the motorcade prior to any movements' about what to do in case of an emergency, like an attack."
