"President Trump's first budget proposal to Congress last week specifically identified steep cuts to hundreds of domestic programs, but Meals on Wheels wasn't one of them." This according to a March 18, 2017 article by USA Today, which said the Federal Government never directly funded Meals on Wheels.
USA Today reported, Trump's budget eliminates a $3 billion program one program of community development block grants that "that started in the Ford administration to give states and cities more flexibility in how they combat poverty." Many States directed a portion of these funds towards Meals on Wheels.
"The budget will adversely impact older adults," CEO of the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging, Sandy Markwood, told USA Today. She added, "We just don’t know how much."
The article said, most of the funding for the 5000 national Meals on Wheels programs come from the Administration for Community Living (ACL), under the Department of Health and Human Services.
ACL recieves $227 million for "home-delivered nutrition services" under programs authorized by the Older Americans Act.
The Trump budget is expected to cut 16% across-the-board of Health and Human Services funding.
