Aquarium Employee Fired for Sleeping with a Walrus

Viral Posts on Facebook alleging that Dr. Monica Alvis has been terminated from the Georgia Aquarium for having sexual relations with a walrus.

iRumorMill.com Determination:  Hoax

Dr. Monica Alvis - Georgia AquariumThe source for this story was a website called Newswatch28.com. According to the disclaimer on the site, the story appears to be satire and should not be taken seriously.

The disclaimer said, "Shocking news and stories, celebrity news and gossip. Whether currently occurring, interesting, controversial, abnormal, thought provoking or satirical, we only wish to inform and entertain with the content we publish."

A Google image search of the photograph attached to the story took us to a website called Mongabay.com and the description on the page said the animal in the picture was not a walrus, but a grey seal, named Spook. The woman in the photo was an animal trainer named Joanne Sottile. Also, the photo was taken at the Wildlife Conservation Society's New York Aquarium in Brooklyn, New York, not at the Georgia Aquarium.

The iRumorMill.com crew reached out to the Georgia Aquarium for an official statement and a spokesperson confirmed that the story was completely fictional. She went on to say, "The people, animals and actions mentioned are not representative of Georgia Aquarium in any way."
